Today, Kimal celebrates its 60th anniversary, and the start of a new era in the Company’s remarkable history. From the humblest of beginnings, Kimal is now recognised by clinical authorities as a leader and innovator in customised procedure packs and vascular access devices.
A family business from the start, that family today extends to over 600 employees globally, all manufacturing, selling, and distributing essential and often life-saving medical products to hospitals across the world.
Like all good entrepreneurial fairy tales the Kimal family adventure started in a garden shed. It was the early 60s and George Press, a Sales Manager with a background in the Laboratory Equipment industry saw an opportunity to set up his own manufacturing business, making and selling laboratory ware. He produced the metalwork from a workshop in High Wycombe and used his old contacts to blow and cut the glass, then sold the end product to laboratories at Glaxo and ICI, as well as research labs in London hospitals and universities.
Head office was a garden shed at the bottom of the Press family’s council house garden in Uxbridge, where George’s wife Diana managed the paperwork as her husband continued with his day job as a Sales Manager. As confidence in the fledgling business grew, George and Diana formed Kimal Scientific Products Limited in November 1964, naming the Company after their two children at the time, Kim and Alan The Company continued to grow and to build on the strength of the family spirit that had created it. The Press Family were all closely involved right from the beginning. “My grandmother and grandfather worked in the Company, my mum and dad, my wife Sue and I, my sister, my godfather, his sister-in-law, and my auntie… it was a very family-oriented Company right from the start.” – Alan Press.
In its remarkable sixty-year history, Kimal has grown from a shed at the bottom of a council house garden, to be one of the most respected manufacturers and distributors of medical packs and devices in the world, serving a far-reaching network of customers in over seventy countries worldwide. The Company has been responsible for launching some of the ‘healthcare firsts’ in the UK, including one of the first heart pacemakers, the Judkins catheter, the world’s first hollow fibre dialyser, the first US coronary angioplasty balloon technology, and the first coronary stent. Today, Kimal’s mission to deliver healthcare innovation and provide treatment solutions to support best-in-class patient outcomes, holds firm and the Kimal team looks forward to another sixty years with excitement.
